Ukraine's 1991 declaration of independence came not through revolution but through a parliamentary vote on August 24th, held the day after the failed Moscow coup attempt against Gorbachev had already fatally weakened Soviet central authority. The 25th anniversary issues of 2016 arrived during a period of acute national stress — two years into the Donbas conflict and following the loss of Crimea — which gave the commemorative program a political weight well beyond routine anniversary coinage.
At 69.1 grams of .900 gold, this is among the heaviest pieces in the NBU's modern commemorative program. Mintages for high-denomination Ukrainian gold issues of this period were typically in the dozens to low hundreds.
