Additional information

Alpha Yaya Diallo was a Fulani chief from the Labé region who resisted French colonial expansion in Guinea with enough tenacity that the French deported him twice — first to Dahomey, then to Mauritania, where he died in 1912. His rehabilitation as a national hero under Sékou Touré's post-independence government made him a natural subject for coinage. The 1969 commemorative series was part of a broader propaganda effort to construct a Guinean national identity rooted in anti-colonial resistance.

Trial strikes in this series are considerably scarcer than the issued pieces. KM#TS3 designates it a trial, struck in sterling to test die and planchet specifications before full production approval.
