The BCEAO issues gold fractionals of this type primarily for the international bullion and collector market — they do not circulate within the West African CFA franc zone, where the currency remains pegged to the euro at 655.957 francs per euro, a rate fixed since 1999 and unchanged since the original franc peg of 1948. At half a gram of four-nines gold, the denomination printed on the coin bears no relationship to any transaction it would ever facilitate.
