| Obverse description | The obverse features the coat of arms of Senegal centrally positioned in the field, depicting a quartered shield with a lion passant and a baobab tree, flanked by two symmetrical olive branches and surmounted by a five-pointed star. Pterygotus was a genus of eurypterid — a sea scorpion — that reached nearly two and a half meters in length, making it among the largest arthropods ever documented in the fossil record. It went extinct roughly 370 million years ago at the end of the Devonian. Senegal's use of it here continues a pattern of CFA-zone microgold issues that target the collector market almost exclusively, bearing no practical relationship to the issuing nation's economic or natural history.
