Obverse description The obverse features a hyena depicted in full profile facing right, rendered in moderate relief against a flat field. The circumferential legend reads 'REPUBLIQUE CENTRAFRICAINE' along the upper periphery and '60 ANS DE L'INDEPENDENCE' along the lower periphery — the latter bearing a notable orthographic error, employing the anglicised form 'INDEPENDENCE' in place of the correct French 'INDEPENDANCE'. This commemorative design marks the 60th anniversary of Central African Republic independence. The entire composition is struck in brass with a milled border encircling the design.

Additional information

The BEAC issues coinage for six member states of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon — sharing a currency whose parity with the euro has been fixed since 1999 at 655.957 francs, a rate inherited directly from the old franc CFA's peg to the French franc.

The 250-franc denomination is a relatively recent addition to the BEAC circulation series, introduced to bridge a practical gap in everyday transactions that smaller denominations could not efficiently cover.
