| Additional information |
The Bank of Yemen — the central bank of the Yemen Arab Republic, the northern state then still distinct from the Marxist People's Democratic Republic of Yemen to the south — issued this denomination during a period of acute political instability following the assassinations of two successive heads of state in 1977 and 1978. Unification was still nine years away. The fils denominations of this era saw limited circulation in rural highland areas where the Maria Theresa thaler remained the preferred medium for large transactions well into the 1980s.
