Issued to mark the 850th anniversary of Portuguese independence, this coin commemorates Afonso Henriques declaring himself king following the Battle of São Mamede in 1128 and the subsequent recognition by Pope Alexander III in 1179. The long gap between those two events — over fifty years — means "foundation" itself remains a matter of historiographical debate among Portuguese scholars.
