Niue's high-denomination gold issues exist almost entirely as bullion vehicles dressed in collector packaging — the island's GDP would not sustain a domestic market for 31.1g gold coins at face value. The "Year of the Rat" cycle appeals primarily to Southeast Asian and diaspora buyers, where the 2020 lunar year carries particular weight: the Rat opens the twelve-year zodiac cycle, making this the first issue in a complete series restart.
