Obverse description The coat of arms of Niue occupies the central field, depicted as a quartered shield bearing symbolic devices including the Southern Cross stars, traditional canoes, a coconut palm, a banana plant, and crossed hammer and pick, all rendered in high relief. The shield is surmounted by a Tudor crown and flanked on both sides by fern fronds serving as supporters. The legend NIUE appears along the upper left periphery and the date 1988 along the upper right, both in incuse raised lettering against the polished proof field.
