| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Barbados occupies the central field, depicting a shield quartered with a bearded fig tree and two pride of Barbados flowers, supported by a dolphin to the left and a pelican to the right. A helmet and mantling surmount the shield, with crossed tridents as a crest. A ribbon scroll at the base bears the national motto PRIDE AND INDUSTRY. Issued to mark the 250th anniversary of George Washington's birth, this coin reflects Barbados's historically grounded reason to claim Washington as its own — in 1751, a 19-year-old Washington made his only trip outside North America when he traveled to Barbados with his ailing half-brother Lawrence, who sought the island's climate as a tuberculosis remedy. Washington contracted a mild case of smallpox during the visit, which likely conferred the immunity that spared him during the epidemic that devastated the Continental Army at Valley Forge some 26 years later.
