Additional information

Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Elizabeth II's coronation, this was one of several Commonwealth nations that struck commemorative gold in 1978 to honor the jubilee. Jamaica's entry is among the heavier gold issues from the series — 43 grams of .900 gold placed it firmly in the collector market rather than any circulation function, with a face value bearing no relationship to its bullion content even at 1978 gold prices.

The Bank of Jamaica had only been issuing its own coinage since 1969, following decimalisation. KM#78 remains one of the more substantial pieces in the early Jamaican numismatic catalogue by weight.
