Additional information

The 1986 Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh — the first time Scotland hosted — and were overshadowed by a widespread boycott from African, Caribbean, and Asian nations protesting Margaret Thatcher's refusal to impose economic sanctions on apartheid South Africa. Thirty-two of fifty-nine invited nations withdrew. The Bahamas was among those that did not boycott, and this gold issue was struck in that charged political atmosphere.

At 47.54 g of .917 gold, the piece contains more fine gold than a standard British sovereign by a factor of roughly five.
