Reverse description A large, detailed portrait of William Shakespeare occupies the central field, depicted as a bearded man in Elizabethan dress holding a quill pen to his chin in a contemplative pose. A globe in low relief forms the background behind his bust, evoking the theatrical motto of the Globe Theatre. In the lower portion of the field, a finely engraved aerial view of the Globe Theatre is rendered in precise architectural detail. Shakespeare's facsimile signature appears in cursive script at lower right, accompanied by the engraver's initials JI. The curved legend ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, AND ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN MERELY PLAYERS arcs along the upper rim, separated by interpuncts.
