Niue's authority to issue legal tender coinage derives from a 1975 agreement with New Zealand, which retains responsibility for the island's defense and foreign affairs. The arrangement has made Niue one of the most prolific small-territory minting programs in the world, with the New Zealand Mint producing the bulk of its collector issues. This platinum Tree of Life piece is among the few Niue releases in that metal — platinum denominations from the program are issued in far smaller quantities than the gold and silver counterparts and rarely appear on the secondary market within the first year of release.
