The Green March of November 1975 was Hassan II's masterstroke of domestic politics: mobilizing 350,000 unarmed civilians to cross into Spanish-controlled Western Sahara forced Madrid's hand at a moment when Francisco Franco lay dying and Spain had no appetite for a colonial confrontation. The territory was formally transferred under the Madrid Accords signed that same month.
This 35th anniversary issue was struck under Hassan's son and successor. The underlying territorial dispute with the Polisario Front — backed for decades by Algeria — remained unresolved at the time of minting and has not been settled since.
