Mohammed VI ascended the Moroccan throne in July 1999 following the death of Hassan II, who had ruled for 38 years. Bank Al-Maghrib's anniversary commemorative series marking his reign milestones was struck in relatively modest quantities, distributed primarily through the bank's Casablanca headquarters and a small network of authorized dealers — not through general circulation channels.
The eighth anniversary issue falls within a politically active period: Morocco submitted its autonomy proposal for the Western Sahara to the UN Security Council in April 2007, framing it as a serious diplomatic alternative to full independence.
