Mohammed VI ascended the Moroccan throne on July 30, 1999, following the death of his father Hassan II, who had ruled for 38 years. The fifth anniversary issue in 2004 came at a moment when the new king was actively distancing his administration from some of the more repressive practices of the Hassan era — the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, established to address historical human rights abuses, had been created just months before this coin was struck.
