Additional information

Part of the Chinese Lunar New Year bullion series that expanded aggressively through the 1990s as the People's Bank of China cultivated both domestic collectors and the overseas Chinese diaspora market. The 1997 issues carried additional weight given the handover of Hong Kong in July of that year, driving collector demand well above typical annual production runs for the series.

The .999 fine standard adopted for these pieces was a deliberate departure from the .900 fineness used in earlier Chinese gold issues, instituted to compete directly with the Royal Canadian Mint's Maple Leaf program.
