Additional information

China's platinum Panda series launched in 1987, a calculated move to compete with the Platinum Maple Leaf and attract Western bullion investors during a period of aggressive Chinese expansion into precious metals markets. The 1990 issue came during a particularly fraught moment — Western governments were considering sanctions following Tiananmen Square, and hard currency export products like this coin served a very specific diplomatic and economic function for Beijing.

Mintages for the platinum fraction were never large, and the 1/4 oz denomination consistently saw the lowest production runs within the annual set.
