Turkey's "Yeni" (New) Lira designation was itself short-lived — introduced in 2005 to shed six zeroes from the old lira after one of the more spectacular currency collapses in modern Turkish history, it was dropped again in 2009, making any coin bearing "Yeni Lira" a product of just four years of nomenclature. This piece falls near the end of that window.
The Sagittarius issue is part of a zodiac series produced by Darphane, a mint operating continuously on its Istanbul site since the Ottoman period. Collector-targeted silver zodiac series were a reliable revenue stream for state mints across this decade, and Turkey's entry is no exception.
