Turkey's "Yeni" (New) Lira system was introduced in January 2005 specifically to erase the damage of decades of inflation that had pushed the old lira to 1,750,000 per US dollar by 2004 — one of the worst currency debasements in modern Turkish history. The redenomination dropped six zeroes overnight. This coin was struck three years into that stabilization period, when the mint began issuing themed silver collector pieces partly as a foreign-exchange earner.
The Capricorn issue is part of a zodiac series produced for the collector market; circulation was never the intent. By 2009, "Yeni" was itself dropped from the currency name, making the designation on this coin a brief historical footnote.
