Additional information

The Universala Ligo — the Universal League — issued a series of gold Esperanto "steloj" pieces during the 1960s as non-circulating fantasy issues intended for collectors sympathetic to the internationalist language movement. They carry no governmental authority and were never legal tender anywhere. X#8 references the Unusual World Coins catalog, the standard home for such para-numismatic pieces.

Fifty grams of gold in 1965 represented a significant premium over the $35/oz Bretton Woods fixed price — meaning these sold heavily on ideological appeal, not bullion logic.
