Reverse description A detailed rendering of the Victoria, the historic carrack that completed the first circumnavigation of the globe under Ferdinand Magellan's expedition, is depicted sailing under full canvas in three-quarter view to the left, riding stylized waves in the lower field. The sails bear cross devices, and the rigging is rendered with fine engraving. The ship's name VICTORIA appears in italic script along the upper field, while the date 2006 is inscribed in the lower exergue, all within a reeded border.

Additional information

Somalia's Central Bank issued this novelty series in the mid-2000s largely for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation — the country had been without a functioning central government since 1991. The ship-themed pieces were produced by private mints on contract and sold through international distributors, bearing denominations that bore little relation to any active monetary policy.
