Reverse description At center, a portrait effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother is depicted facing slightly to the right. The legend THE CENTENARY OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER arcs around the upper periphery. The dates 1900-2000 appear below the portrait. Flanking the effigy on either side are two pairs of ceremonial trumpets joined by a musical staff with notes, their bases entwined with rose garland swags, lending the composition an ornate, heraldic quality.

Additional information

Somalia's late-1990s commemorative program was largely a commercial venture driven by foreign coin marketing firms rather than any domestic monetary need — the country had no functioning central government at the time, with Mogadishu having been without stable administration since Barre's fall in 1991. These pieces were licensed and distributed almost entirely to Western collector markets.

The Queen Mother series appeared across multiple issuing authorities simultaneously in 1999, timed to her 99th birthday.
