This piece was struck to commemorate Pope Paul VI's visit to Uganda in July 1969 — the first papal visit to Africa in history. Paul VI flew to Kampala to canonize the twenty-two Ugandan Martyrs, Catholic converts executed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II between 1885 and 1887. The canonization had been decades in the making, and the visit itself drew enormous crowds to the shrine at Namugongo.
Uganda was just seven years into independence when the issue was authorized, and the Bank of Uganda used the occasion to produce one of its most ambitious early commemorative series. The 50-gram, 54mm format placed it among the largest silver pieces issued by any East African state to that point.
