Somalia's 2004 commemorative output was prolific and frankly opportunistic — the country had no functioning central government at the time, with the Transitional National Government holding nominal authority while large portions of territory remained outside any administrative control. Coins bearing the Somali state name were being licensed to foreign minting operations and sold directly into the collector market, never intended for domestic circulation.
This piece depicting Pope John Paul II was almost certainly struck in anticipation of his death, which came in April 2005.
