Reverse description Within a raised inner circle, the reverse depicts a scene from the life of Pope John Paul II in which the pontifically vested Pope, wearing a mitre and holding a pastoral staff (ferula) in his left hand, extends his right hand in blessing toward a kneeling Mother Teresa, who is clad in her characteristic white and blue-bordered habit. The scene is rendered in high relief with carefully detailed drapery on both figures. The arc legend THE LIFE OF POPE JOHN PAUL II runs along the upper border of the outer ring, flanked by two small cross ornaments at the lower left and right. The date 2004 appears at the base of the outer ring.

Additional information

Mother Teresa was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 19, 2003, making this 2004 issue a direct response to that ceremony. Somalia's government had no meaningful connection to either figure — the country was effectively stateless at the time, with the Transitional National Government controlling little beyond a nominal mandate. These commemoratives were licensed through foreign intermediaries and sold entirely to the collector market.

KM#157 saw no circulation whatsoever inside Somalia.
