The Sumatran serow (Capricornis sumatraensis) depicted on this issue was listed under CITES Appendix I by the early 2000s, reflecting serious conservation pressure across its Southeast Asian range — including the Malaysian peninsula. Bank Negara's decision to feature endangered fauna on circulating coinage during this period reflected a broader government push tied to wildlife protection initiatives, though the coins were largely displaced from active circulation by this point as lower-denomination brass pieces had become economically marginal. KM#84 is part of the second definitive series issued under Yang di-Pertuan Agong Syed Sirajuddin, who acceded in December 2001.
