The Leatherback Turtle series coin was issued as Malaysia's leatherback nesting population was already in effective collapse — by the mid-2000s, fewer than two females were recorded nesting annually at Rantau Abang in Terengganu, down from hundreds in the 1950s. The coin's timing was less celebration than quiet acknowledgment of a local extinction in progress.
