The twelfth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, ascended to the throne in December 2001, and coins bearing his effigy entered circulation as Malaysia was consolidating its recovery from the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis — a period during which Bank Negara had controversially pegged the ringgit at 3.80 to the US dollar, a peg that remained in force until July 2005. This issue appeared just a year after that peg was lifted in favor of a managed float.
At 15.50 g and 34 mm, this is among the heaviest and largest coins in Malaysian decimal circulation, which contributed to its eventual discontinuation as vending machine compatibility and metal costs made the format increasingly impractical.
