KM#99 belongs to the second series of Malaysian sen coins introduced after the 1989 coinage reform, when Bank Negara replaced the earlier numismatic series tied to state ceremonial regalia. The Great Egret reverse was paired with the portrait of Yang di-Pertuan Agong XII, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, who ascended to the throne in December 2001 as the thirteenth King by personal count but held the twelfth numbered Agong designation under Malaysia's unique rotational constitutional monarchy system. Production of this type was relatively short-lived, as the entire brass sen series was demonetized in 2008 following a government decision to phase out low-denomination coinage on cost and utility grounds.
