The twelfth Yang di-Pertuan Agong was Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, who ascended to the throne in December 2001 following the death of Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. This coin belongs to the Wildlife series introduced by Bank Negara in the early 2000s, which systematically replaced the earlier Agong XI circulation coinage. The estuarine crocodile depicted was already under protected status in Malaysia by this point, its populations having been severely reduced by the hide trade in the mid-twentieth century.
