KM#93 belongs to the Wildlife series issued by Bank Negara Malaysia in the early 2000s, a program prompted partly by growing international attention to deforestation in Borneo and the Peninsula. The Asian Fairy Bluebird selection was deliberate — the species depends almost entirely on intact lowland forest canopy, making it a pointed choice for a country then facing sustained criticism over logging concessions.
The twelfth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, ascended in December 2001, placing his effigy on this denomination through both years of issue.
