Obverse description The obverse features the coat of arms of the Republic of Seychelles centrally positioned in the field, depicting a shield supported by two marlins and surmounted by a white-tailed tropicbird, with a scroll at the base bearing the national motto FINIS CORONAT OPVS in raised lettering. The legend REPUBLIC OF SEYCHELLES arcs along the upper periphery, while the date 1996 appears at the bottom, flanked by raised dots. The design is executed in high-relief proof finish against a mirror-polished field, lending exceptional clarity to the heraldic detail.

Additional information

The Commonwealth of Nations had little obvious relevance to the Seychelles' founding moment — the islands were a British crown colony until 1976, and membership followed independence almost automatically. The 1996 issue marks the organization's 50th anniversary, dated from the 1949 London Declaration that transformed the British Commonwealth into its modern, republic-inclusive form. That declaration was itself a pragmatic fix for India's impending republican status, which would otherwise have forced its expulsion under older membership rules.
