Issued as part of the FAO's global coinage program, which encouraged member nations throughout the 1970s to mint pieces themed around food security and agricultural development. The Maldives, whose economy at the time was almost entirely dependent on fishing and limited reef agriculture, had little conventional farming to celebrate — making this one of the more conceptually strained entries in the FAO series.
Fr#1 designation confirms this as the first listed gold type for the Maldives in Friedberg's gold coinage reference.
