This piece was struck specifically for the October 1971 celebrations at Persepolis, where Mohammad Reza Shah staged a lavish 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire — an event so extravagant it reportedly cost between $100 and $300 million, drew heads of state from 69 countries, and featured a banquet catered by Maxim's of Paris. The commemorative coin series issued alongside it was never intended for general circulation.
The .999 fineness is notably purer than Iran's standard silver coinage of the period, reinforcing its status as a presentation piece rather than a monetary one.
