Additional information

The 1972 Syrian coinage series was issued shortly after Hafez al-Assad consolidated power following his November 1970 coup — the so-called "Corrective Movement" that ousted Salah Jadid's wing of the Ba'ath Party. This coin belongs to the first standardized series struck under Assad's direct authority, with the Central Bank restructured to reflect the new government's administrative priorities.

KM#101 is not a scarce type, but circulated heavily through the 1970s Syrian economy during a period of Soviet-aligned state expansion and nationalization programs that made hard coinage a routine daily instrument.
