Issued ahead of the bicentenary commemorations of Trafalgar, which fell in October 2005, Jersey was among the first territories to release gold coinage marking the anniversary. HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar, survived the battle despite taking heavy fire and is still in commission today — the oldest naval vessel on active duty anywhere in the world, currently dry-docked at Portsmouth. The 1805 engagement ended any realistic prospect of a French naval challenge to British maritime dominance for the remainder of the Napoleonic Wars.
