Gibraltar's 1975 gold issues were produced under the authority of the Gibraltar Government, newly empowered to issue its own coinage following the Coinage Ordinance of 1967 — itself a response to the 1964 closure of the land border by Spain under Franco, which had politically isolated the territory and sharpened its drive for distinct civic identity. The 22 mm format at .917 fineness places this squarely in the sovereign-weight tradition, though it is not a sovereign by any technical definition.
Mintages for this series were low and largely absorbed by collectors at issue.
