The 2018 Royal Mint platinum bullion program marked a deliberate push into a market long dominated by Canadian Maple Leafs and American Eagles. Britain had produced platinum bullion pieces sporadically since the 1990s Britannia series, but the 2018 Platinum Britannia represented the first coordinated annual bullion offering in the metal, timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Elizabeth II's accession year and broader Crown dependencies commemorative activity. Mintage figures for the quarter-ounce denomination were not publicly capped, making population data from grading services the most reliable gauge of actual production numbers.
