The Royal Dragon series draws on Welsh heraldic tradition, and Charles III's accession made the red dragon — long associated with the Prince of Wales title he held for over six decades — a logical choice for a flagship bullion series. The .9999 fineness is a deliberate step up from the older Britannia gold standard of .9167, a change the Royal Mint made to compete directly with Canadian Maple Leafs and Australian Kangaroos in the fine gold bullion market.
