Sudan's first domestic currency issue came with independence from Anglo-Egyptian Condominium rule in January 1956, but the printing was completed before that transition was formalized — Waterlow & Sons had the contract in hand while the political outcome was still being negotiated. The P#A1 series is consequently dated 1955, making it one of the rare cases where a note predates the sovereign state it was issued to serve.
Waterlow & Sons lost their entire banknote business shortly after this period, undone by the Gustaaf Mackay scandal and a catastrophic forgery liability judgment. This note is among their final African commissions.
