Schabbelhaus was one of Lübeck's most celebrated wine taverns, housed in a Renaissance merchant's building on the Mengstraße dating to 1569. During the postwar Kleingeldnot — the small-change famine that gripped Germany between 1919 and 1922 — businesses and municipalities issued their own fractional Notgeld to fill the gap left by hoarded coins. A wine tavern commissioning its own 25 Pfennig scrip is not unusual for the period, but the local designer credit to Virck suggests this wasn't a generic printer's stock issue.
The building itself was demolished in the 1939 Mengstraße clearance project. Notes from this issuer are among the few surviving records of the tavern's commercial identity.
