Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig is a small village in the Thuringian Forest, and like hundreds of German municipalities during the hyperinflationary chaos of the early 1920s, it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — to fill the void left by a national coinage system that had effectively collapsed. The Graphische Werkstätten in nearby Ilmenau printed for numerous small Thuringian issuers during this period, making regional attribution straightforward but individual print runs difficult to verify independently.
Collector demand for Thuringian Notgeld drove many municipalities to issue decorative series beyond genuine monetary necessity — it is worth considering whether this piece circulated at all.
