Appen is a small village in the Pinneberg district, and like hundreds of other minor German municipalities it was forced into the notgeld business after the Reichsbank's coin withdrawal policies of 1916–1917 created acute shortages of small change. The Konrad Hanf firm in Hamburg handled a significant volume of this municipal emergency paper across Schleswig-Holstein, producing workmanlike but technically competent notes — the watermarked paper on this issue being a relatively conscientious security measure for something essentially local in function and brief in intended life.
DeNG 1#39.1 places this among the earlier, more sober kleingeldscheine issues, before the collectible-themed "serienscheine" wave made notgeld a deliberate philatelic product after 1920.
