Bolkenhain — now Bolków, Poland — was a small market town in Lower Silesia, and its Stadtsparkasse issued this Notgeld during the acute small-change shortage that paralyzed German retail commerce in 1921–22. Municipal savings banks, rather than city councils or merchants, were among the more fiscally conservative issuers of emergency currency; their notes tended to be printed in proper facilities rather than run off locally on whatever press was available.
Carl Flemming & Wiskott in Glogau handled a considerable volume of Silesian Notgeld work during this period, and the Handke-designed series for Bolkenhain reflects that — competent regional printing house, named designer, modest denomination. The reference number suggests at least six face variants within this single value.
