Obverse description The obverse is printed in blue-grey on a cream paper ground with a decorative guilloche border incorporating corner rosettes and the denomination numeral '25' at each corner. At upper left, the city arms of Dömitz — a tower gate on a shield — appear alongside the legends 'STADT DÖMITZ' and 'GUTSCHEIN ÜBER' to the right. The central vignette consists of an ornate circular guilloche frame enclosing the large numeral '25', flanked on either side by the word 'PFENNIG' in bold letterpress cartouches. Below, the issuing authority 'Sparkasse der Stadt Dömitz i/M.' and the date 'den 1. Juni 1920' are given, accompanied by a manuscript signature, with a German-language redemption clause printed in small text at the foot.

Comments

Dömitz is a small fortified town on the Elbe in Mecklenburg, and its savings bank — the Sparkasse der Stadt Dömitz — was among the many municipal institutions that issued notgeld during the acute small-change shortage of 1920. The Reichsbank's coin production simply couldn't keep pace with postwar demand, and local authorities filled the gap with printed scrip backed by nothing more than civic credibility.

The Grabowski reference D24.2a distinguishes this from at least one other variant in the series, suggesting differences in printing, paper, or serial numbering across issues — worth checking against the Tieste catalogue cross-reference at 1430.10.05.
