Neustadt bei Pinne — now Lwówek in western Poland — was a small Prussian market town that found itself issuing emergency currency during the notgeld period, when the postwar coin shortage left municipalities scrambling for fractional denominations the Reichsbank couldn't supply. J. P. Himmer in Augsburg was a prolific notgeld printer serving dozens of such communities simultaneously, which means the production quality here reflects a commercial job-lot operation rather than any civic ambition. The official stamp was the issuing authority's own contribution — the one element that distinguished a valid note from an unauthorized copy off the same press run.
