Ettal is a Benedictine abbey in Bavaria whose estate administration — the Klostergutsverwaltung — issued this note during the notgeld crisis of 1919, when small-denomination coinage had all but vanished from circulation. The abbey's farm operations required a functional medium of exchange for day-to-day transactions with workers and local suppliers. J. P. Himmer in Augsburg, a long-established regional printer with roots to 1842, handled a substantial volume of Bavarian notgeld work during this period and the production here is competent if modest.

Ettal's monastic economy gave the issuing authority an unusual degree of self-contained credibility — the estate itself backed the scrip rather than a municipal treasury.
