Comments

The Handels- und Gewerbekammer für den Kreis Meiningen — the chamber of commerce for the Meiningen district in Thuringia — issued this note during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in the immediate postwar years. Metal coinage had been hoarded, melted, or simply failed to keep pace with inflation, and chambers of commerce, municipalities, and private businesses across the country filled the gap with Notgeld. Keyßner'sche Hofbuchdruckerei, a local Meiningen press that had previously operated as a court printer for the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, handled production entirely within the district.
